Roof Moss Removal
For heavily moss-covered roofs that need more than a biocide-only treatment. Manual scraping removes the bulk; our biocide softwash kills the spores at root level and keeps the roof clean for 4–5 years. From £350.
Manual scraping vs biocide-only treatment
For most roofs, a biocide-only softwash is sufficient. The biocide kills moss, algae and lichen at the spore level, and the dead biological matter washes away naturally over subsequent rainfall over 4–8 weeks.
For roofs with heavy, established moss coverage — particularly north-facing slopes that haven't been treated in 10 or more years — the depth of the moss layer is too great for biocide alone to work efficiently. Manual scraping first removes the bulk of the growth, gives the biocide direct access to the underlying tile surface, and dramatically speeds the visible clean result.
Crucially, scraping alone is never enough. Without the biocide step, regrowth begins within weeks — the spores embedded in the tile surface are untouched. The combination of scraping plus biocide is the only approach that delivers both an immediate visual result and lasting protection.

Heavy scraping adds time and labour to the standard softwash price. The survey will clarify whether scraping is needed before we quote. Most properties don't need scraping — a biocide-only softwash is sufficient for light to moderate coverage.

Does my roof need scraping or just a biocide treatment?
Most roofs — even those with significant moss coverage — can be treated with biocide alone. Scraping is only recommended where the moss layer is over 10mm deep and physically blocking the biocide from reaching the tile surface. We assess this at survey and only recommend scraping when it genuinely adds value to the outcome.
Is manual scraping safe for roof tiles?
Yes, when done correctly. We use long-handled, flexible scraping tools operated from roof ladders — we never walk on roof tiles to scrape, which can crack or dislodge tiles. The tools are designed to remove moss without damaging the tile surface or disturbing ridge or hip mortar.
What happens to the scraped moss?
We collect all scraped moss debris into bags as we go. Nothing is left on the roof surface, in the gutters, or on the ground. All debris is taken away at the end of the job.
Why isn't scraping alone enough to stop moss coming back?
Scraping removes the visible moss but leaves millions of microscopic spores embedded in the tile surface. Without a biocide treatment, these spores germinate as soon as conditions are right — typically within 4–8 weeks of scraping. The biocide kills the spores at root level, which is why the combination of scraping plus biocide delivers lasting results.
How long before I see results after treatment?
If scraping is included, the roof looks dramatically better immediately. The biocide then works over the following 4–8 weeks as remaining biological matter dies, desiccates and is washed away by rainfall. Most customers are completely satisfied within 6 weeks of treatment.
