Why gutter clearance matters
Gutters carry rain away from your walls, so a blockage can send water down the brickwork instead. Over time, that can lead to damp patches and stained or rotting fascias. Leaves, silt and moss are the usual culprits, and a dirty roof sheds moss into the gutters below.
That is why a roof clean without gutter clearance only moves the problem. We include clearing of fallen moss debris in every roof cleaning job as standard. For gutters that nobody has cleared in years, or homes under heavy tree cover, a dedicated visit makes sure the whole system runs freely.
Moss itself can be a drainage issue too. The National Federation of Roofing Contractors (NFRC) says moss on roof tiles is rarely a problem, and only needs removing if it blocks gutters, outlets and other drainage points. Our post on whether roof moss harms your house explains when that applies.
How we clear gutters
We use a high-reach wet-and-dry vacuum on a carbon fibre pole system. It reaches the gutters of most two-storey homes from the ground, so we rarely need to climb. This matters because HSE figures show falls from height were the leading cause of fatal workplace accidents in Great Britain in 2025/26.
HSE guidance also says ladders suit low-risk, short-duration tasks. It recommends other equipment if you would stay on a leaning ladder for more than 30 minutes at a time. Some roofs still need closer access, so see our post on whether roof cleaning needs scaffolding for how we decide.

How often should gutters be cleared?
We suggest once a year, ideally in late autumn after the leaves fall. However, homes under heavy tree cover may need a second visit. The same goes for homes beside a roof that we have just softwashed, because a pulse of dead moss can wash down into the gutters.
What do you use to clear gutters?
We use a high-reach wet-and-dry vacuum with a carbon fibre pole. It reaches most two-storey gutters from the ground, so it is quicker and less disruptive than ladder work. The suction also pulls out fine silt, which hand scooping often misses.
Do you provide proof the gutters are clear?
Yes. A camera on the pole films each gutter run before and after clearance. You get the footage in your job report. That is handy for landlords, managing agents and anyone who wants a record, since it shows the before and after clearly.
What if you find damage inside the gutters?
We photograph and report any cracks, failed joints, sagging sections or leaks. We do not repair gutters ourselves, but we can point you towards local firms that do. That way, you still get a clear picture of what needs fixing.
Do you clear downpipes as well as gutters?
Yes. Every clearance includes a downpipe flush, where we run water from the top and check that it flows freely at the bottom. If a downpipe has a blockage, we clear it in most cases at no extra charge.
